Many students ask us how to start their university application in Malaysia. The process is not difficult when you have the correct information and documents. Here is the complete process in simple steps.
1. Choose Your Programme and University
First, decide whether you want to study for a foundation, diploma, bachelor’s degree, master’s degree or PhD. Check the entry requirements, tuition fees, intake dates, campus location and programme duration before making a decision.

2. Check Your Eligibility
Every university has different admission requirements. Your eligibility depends on your previous qualifications, grades, subject background, English ability and chosen programme. Checking your eligibility before applying can save time and prevent unnecessary costs.
3. Prepare Your Documents
Most universities normally request:
- Passport copy
- Passport-size photograph
- Academic certificates
- Academic transcripts or mark sheets
- English-language certificate, when required
- CV or research proposal for certain postgraduate programmes
Make sure your name and date of birth are consistent across every document. For a new Student Pass application, EMGS currently requires at least 18 months of passport validity. Always check the official EMGS document requirements.
4. Submit Your University Application
Once your documents are ready, the university application can be submitted. The university may request additional or corrected documents. If the application is accepted, you will receive a conditional or full offer letter.
Check the programme, intake, campus, tuition fees and payment instructions carefully. Make payments only through the university’s official payment channel and keep every receipt.
5. Start the Student Visa Process
After receiving the offer letter, the Student Pass application can begin through Education Malaysia Global Services, commonly known as EMGS. The application normally includes the offer letter, passport, photograph, academic documents, English-language evidence and Health Declaration Form.

6. Receive Your eVAL and Entry Visa
Once the necessary approval is granted, you will receive an Electronic Visa Approval Letter, also called an eVAL. Students from some countries must also obtain a Single Entry Visa before travelling. Bangladesh is currently included in the EMGS list of countries that require one.
Do not buy a non-refundable flight ticket before receiving the required visa approvals.
7. Travel to Malaysia
Keep printed and digital copies of your passport, offer letter, eVAL, entry visa, accommodation details, university contact information and payment receipts. Inform the university about your arrival if arrival reporting is required.
8. Complete Medical Screening and Registration
New international students normally need to complete medical screening at an approved clinic within seven working days of arriving in Malaysia. The university will then guide you through Student Pass endorsement, i-Kad processing, registration and class enrolment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I apply without IELTS?
This depends on the university and programme. Some universities may accept another approved English qualification or issue a conditional offer. English evidence may still be required for the Student Pass process.
How long does the process take?
There is no single processing time. It depends on the university, programme, documents, EMGS assessment and immigration approval. Start well before your intended intake.
Can I book my flight after receiving an offer letter?
An offer letter is not a visa approval. Wait for the required eVAL and entry documents before booking a non-refundable flight.
What happens if a document is missing?
The university or EMGS may request it, which can delay the application. Check every document before submission.
